New to massage and want to know what to expect at your first appointment? Curious about cupping? Here's everything you need to know and more.
General Questions
What can I expect at my first appointment?
We begin with a consultation. I ask you about your health history and together we set an intention for your massage based on what results you are looking for (i.e. injury rehab, stress relief, etc). During the massage we will communicate about pressure to ensure that it meets your level of comfort.
How often should I get a massage?
If you have pain or stress that is interfering with your daily life and inhibiting you doing activities you enjoy, I generally recommend weekly or bi-weekly massages until the issue is resolved.
If you do not have pain or stress inhibiting your daily routine, once a month is a great regimen.
However, I encourage everyone to listen to your body and schedule at a frequency that feels right for you.
Do I need to arrive early?
Nope! But if needed, you are welcome to arrive 10 minutes early at the most. I use my time before and between appointments to clean equipment and prepare the room for each visit.
What is a consultation?
A consultation is simply the conversation we have upon your arrival to assess what areas/issues we will be focusing on during the appointment. We will do this at the start of every massage.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept card, cash, check and Venmo. I do not have a "preferred" method of payment.
Do you accept tips?
Yes! Tipping is an industry standard for massage therapists (and is sincerely appreciated!), however if leaving a tip is ever out of your budget or inhibits your ability to get massages as frequently as desired, please do not feel obligated to leave a tip!
How should I prepare for a massage?
Here are some tips for a great massage experience:
Arrive hydrated (& drinks plenty of water afterwards)
Wear comfy clothes
Avoid wearing makeup
Plan a relaxing day around your massage: Eating a nutritious meal and taking an epsom salt bath after a massage is a great way to keep the goodness going!
Questions about Cupping
What is cupping?
Myofacial Decompression Therapy, also known as Cupping, is a technique which uses suction cups to create negative pressure in muscular and fascial tissue. It can be used all over the body; on limbs, back, joints, and even the face and abdomen.
Does cupping cost extra?
Cupping is included in each Therapeutic Massage as needed at no additional charge.
Does cupping hurt?
Cupping should not hurt. I ask my clients frequently if the level of suction is too much and quickly adjust to meet their comfort level. Cupping isn not a "no pain no gain" technique. Even gentle cupping can help boost circulation and loosen tight areas of the body.
Will cupping leave bruises?
Cupping can create bruises from pulling blood and lymphatic fluid up to the skin's more superficial layers. They appear as red, pink, brown or purple marks where the cup was applied and can last anywhere from one day to several weeks.
Does cupping work?
Yes! Cupping can be a very effective tool to loosen tight areas of the body. It is also detoxifying; it helps to deeply flush stagnant fluids and, when applied to the abdomen, can help increase bowel movements and reduce bloating.
What are the benefits of cupping the face?
Facial cupping can flush out puffiness, giving the face a more sculpted appearance. It can also help reduce the look of fine lines and brighten the complexion by increasing circulation and collagen development with long term regular use.
Is cupping right for me?
Cupping can help a wide range of problems including tight muscles, knots, sore joints, constipation, bloating and menstrual cramping. During your consultation at your appointment we will determine if cupping will be a good fit for you!
Can I use cups at home?
Yes! I often encourage my clients to buy a set of silicone cups and use then at home for self care much like you would use a foam roller or thera-cane.
